Morgue Files #1: A Walk on the Wild Side

I've had a lot of ideas over the years that never made it out of sketch form. Given the sketchy nature of some of my work, I realize that may be hard for some readers to believe. But even a "Work In Progress" poster child ends up leaving a lot of dead ideas buried in napkins, notebooks and private files. To remedy this wasteful situation, I decided to periodically release work from my morgue files. They're all as half-baked as a Saturday Night Live sketch. Some didn't deserve to be realized more fully. Others had potential, but would take more time than I was willing to commit. In any case, I hope they'll be of passing interest to those who make similar decisions about their own work. Here's the first:

I love to make song parodies. Projects like Little Google Boxes and What if Rod Was One of Us were a lot of fun to make and people seemed to like them. Over the past couple of years, I've started a few other songs that never made it to finished form. This one is a few verses from a take off on Lou Reed's "Take a Walk on the Wild Side." It's acoustic guitar and vocals recorded with an iPhone. I ended up not moving forward because I didn't want to spend the time it would have taken to pull off a worthy video. Maybe someday. Right.

I've been feeling haunted by time.

I've been feeling haunted by time. Maybe it's just the turning season, spring passed by and winter on on the horizon. Or it could be the myopic perception of a subterranean shift in my subconscious lifecycle. In any case, I was drawn yesterday to pair an old song of mine with an amazing clip from a camera moving smoothly down Market Street in 1906 pre-earthquake San Francisco.

What strikes me most about this footage is the feeling of casual normality. People move easily along the street in cars, carts, trolleys and on foot, in a city that is a thriving exemplar of the cutting edge of modernity. There is no sense of the looming cataclysm that will bring their city to the ground, kill 3000 souls and leave a quarter million homeless.

I can't help but feel great kinship with them.
Entrapment
I am so caught up in the day to day
With my eyes on tomorrow but my mind on yesterday
From the daily news to the bills to pay
I am so caught up in the day to day
I am so caught up within my desire
Burning up my life trying to quench each fire
I can never stop and I'm so damned tired
I am so caught up within my desire
I am so caught up in my hidden fears
With my bravest smile holding back my tears
And I've built them strong through the passing years
I am so caught up in my hidden fears
I am so caught up in the roles I play
Who I really am I can barely say
And it's just the same for those who share my stage
I am so caught up in the roles I play
I am so caught up in the day to day
With my eyes on tomorrow but my mind on yesterday
From the daily news to the bills to pay
I am so caught up in the day to day

Fuck You Video - SLCC Version

Since the sentiment is the same, I decided to trasform this SL9B parody song into an SLCC version. All it took was a vintage party planning video from The Prelinger Archives. Maybe I'll get around to some new verses later. The way things are going, it could be the song that never ends.

Fuck You

You thought we'd donate free land again
to SLB and we're like
Fuck you
The Destination Guide listing
wasn't enough, we're like
Fuck You
your community too

When Philip was with us
You were little bitches
Whining every move we made
Now that Rodvik's a hit
We won't take no more shit
Fuck you
Oo. Oo, ooo

No more mercy
All your controversy
Doesn't mean a thing
If you don't like mesh
Or TPV changes
Take your ass to Open Sim
We think it's real funny
That you give us your money
No matter what we do
So go wackadoodle
Cause we know it's futile
Just pay your tier when it due

What If Rod Was One Of Us? (Parody Music Video)

If Rod had an alt who spent a lot of time
Inside of Second Life just hanging out
In clubs and chatting with his friends
Would he still think the same or see things different

And yeah, yeah, Rod is great
And yeah, yea, Rod is good
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

What if Rod was one of us
An AV like one of us
Just some pixelated dust
Living in a Linden home

If Rod had an alt what would it look like
If he lived anonymously
Would he ditch the toga for some fashionista
And be correct anatomically

And yeah, yeah, Rod is great
And yeah, yea, Rod is good
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

What if Rod was one of us
An AV like one of us
Just some pixelated dust
Living in a Linden home

Living in a Linden home?
Or in one of Wizzy's domes
He could look like Sharon Stone
And go to Zindra and get boned

Freedom

My prayer for this day.

Freedom

The great drums of battle ring out round the world
Mythic forces rising, war flags unfurled
We're locked into combat, pulled by ancient chains
While our real enemy's wrapping tight around our brains
So if you'll die for freedom
And if you'll fight for peace
Then look into the mirror brother
And get down on your knees and pray for

Freedom from ignorance and freedom from blame
Freedom from hatred and freedom from shame, fight for
Freedom from craving and freedom from pride
Freedom from the enemy who eats us from inside

The great peace that we long for won't come from a gun
Or the fences we've built up to hoard what we have won
Our own inner demons will always reappear
In the face of some other we'll come to hate and fear
So if you'll fight for justice
And long for liberty
Then join me in the mirror sister
Let's start with you and me and pray for

Freedom from ignorance and freedom from blame
Freedom from hatred and freedom from shame, fight for
Freedom from craving and freedom from pride
Freedom from the enemy who eats us from inside

Eric's Song: Truth is More Surreal Than Fiction

Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt is a seasoned executive with decades of public speaking experience under his belt. So it was hard to fathom the stream of near gibberish that came out of his mouth in a QA at the MediaGuardian Edinburgh International TV Festival. His quilt of "forgot to take my meds" invectives was so surreal that I was inspired to make another video. This time, instead of putting my words in Google's mouth, I just snagged some of the phrases he actually used.
