Avatar Rezzed at 30,000 Feet in RL on OpenSim Server

Botgirl Flies American

With an OpenSimulator server now installed on a laptop, I'm no longer limited to strictly virtual flying. I have a lot to learn (and a lot of content to either create or import) before it's going to be much more than a novelty, but it was really cool to be rezzed at 30,000 feet. Since I had nothing better to do, I also shot some video I'll edit and post here later this week. For now, here's a fast clip that caught some turbulence.

Many flights are beginning to offer wifi. I'm not sure of the speed, but it may be possible to hit a regular grid from an airplane. But there was something about being on a local server that was at 30,000 feet that was very cool. Also to have rezzed without the need for network connectivity. I'm looking forward to someone like Reaction Grid/Jibe porting a Unity 3D based platform onto iphone/iPad/ios . . . not just the client, but an actual server.

Wizzy: Very cool, but even cooler if the server would have been 30,000 feet in the air. :)

Imagine a commercial-quality stand-alone simulator server and client combo, able to operate independently or synchronize fully with a private hosted region or partially with a combination of region-level public content and parcel-level private content.

I can appreciate why the creative, talented and independent-minded content creators and techno-wonks want OpenSim to be a success. The reality is a pre-package or even pre-installed (Windows 8?) stand-alone simulator + client combination is the best chance for greater adoption, next to or in conjunction with a web client, Virtual Worlds have.
