Whether or not the writers were aware Kara was a name for Supergirl (and probably they were), it's a loose association and the allusion would be mostly for contrast value: Supergirl doesn't drink excessively, sleep around, or wage nontsop war against biocidal Berserker machines.
I guess you haven't read the most recent Supergirl arcs. She's one fucked up little Kyrptonian, with serious issues from the past and uncertainty about her identity and destiny.
